As we enter the 2017 holiday season, customer anxiety is at an all-time high. Retailers are likely to face unprecedented scrutiny in the wake of the Equifax data breach and other major cyber incidents that have made headlines.
Retailers must balance data protection measures against the low-friction shopping experience shoppers demand, all the while dealing with an approaching fiscal year-end, and PCI DSS 3.2 requirements going into effect February 1, 2018.
Indeed, a tremendous business risk exists where end-points are left exposed or unaccounted for. Retailers will live and die by the decisions made in consideration of budget and resource allocation to address this.
The most critical, and perhaps most neglected, of these endpoints however, continues to be the human endpoint. This is the subject of our closer examination of the retail industry.
We surveyed 1,017 retail employees using the same survey that underpinned our 2017 State of Privacy and Security Awareness report. Overall, we found 77% of retail workers showed at least some lack of preparedness against the eight cybersecurity and data privacy threat vectors we asked questions about. That’s a higher percentage than the 70% of the general population from our larger survey who showed a similar lack of awareness.
